紫がかった灰みのある焦茶色。 「五倍子」とは、白膠木（ぬるで）という木にできる瘤（こぶ）の名前。その瘤で染めた色。 この木の枝に虫の雌が卵を産み付けると、そこに幼虫が孵化し、樹液を吸って成長する刺激で瘤が五倍にも膨らみ、中が空洞になっているため、「空五倍子」という。 A dark brown color with a purplish gray tint. 'Utsubushi' refers to the gallnut formed on the tree called 'Nurude'.
